SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE
4th ANNUAL CUMBO CLASSIC...???

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...!

The winter of 2009-10 was one for the record books.
While it was wreaking havoc up and down the east coast, the organizers of the 4th Annual Cumbo Classic were doing their best to plan around impending waves of snow storms.  JV Tournament "Take One" was scheduled for December 18-19, 2009.  The event was moved from the spring to just before the holiday break at the request of several participating teams from previous years.  So what happened?  SNOW!!!  JV Tournament "Take Two" was re-scheduled for January 29-30, 2010.  All eight teams were still on board and it was set to be an outstanding tournament for all involved.  So what happened?  SNOW!!!  It was clear that the 4th Annual Cumbo Classic was not to be and with that, all of the tournament t-shirts were mailed out to the players along with our thanks.

Now we are making all things ready for the...
5th Annual Cumbo Classic
December 17-18, 2010

The Annual Cumbo Classic JV Tournament was organized to give junior varsity players an opportunity to compete in a forum designed just for the developing student athlete. In loving memory of Dwayne Allen Cumbo (6/10/82 - 12/12/05), the very first graduate of Southside Baptist Christian School, the goal of the Cumbo Classic is to remind young people that "good success" comes from making the right choices according to the Word of Godhaving the boldness to forsake all to follow Christ!

Southside Baptist Christian School has a unique philosophy with regards to competitive sports.  Coaches and athletes are expected to represent their schools with the highest level of respect, integrity, and Christian character both on and off the court. As an institution, SBCS rejects a "win at all cost" approach to competition and values Christlike pursuit of victory over scoreboard results. This is the mindset we want to impart to each young man that participates in this tournament.

Through this tournament, we hope to emphasize the Christ-like virtues that competition can instill, such as selflessness, sacrifice, servant leadership, teamwork, and resilience.  We recognize that success in these areas will ultimately produce godly results.  The founder, administration and coaching staff of SBCS believe it is best to use athletics as a tool to teach more than skill.  While every effort is made to win each contest, participants should walk away from this experience striving to keep a proper balance of eternal values.

The tragic suicide that took Dwayne home to be with the Lord at such a young age serves as a reminder that the guidance and direction God gives to every young person through parents, teachers, coaches, pastors, youth leaders and so many others is a GOOD thing!!  It is so easy to become  disenchanted on this Christian journey and the enemy of our soul is constantly looking for ways to lure us off the path God has ordained.

It is the sincerest hope and prayer of Deacon William & Elaina Cumbo that every young person participating in this tournament will walk away knowing that OUR GOD IS AN AWESOME GOD and there is no greater joy than that found in a life that pleases the One who died that we might live more abundantly!!
